Things to avoid while in Makao


Macau, You’ve been Conquered!  Upon your first steps in the city, you will be enveloped by an array of new sights, smells and experiences. A place where East meets West, Where ancient traditions live side by side with ultra-modernity. A destination for luxury and excitement as well as relaxation, Known affectionately as the " Las Vegas of Asia ''. There is no shortage of things to do or see in Macau.


However, before you get too caught up in the euphoria of being in one of the most unique locations on the planet, We wanted to share with you 3 ( legit ) things to avoid while in Macau…


Overlooking Heritage Sites

This may sound like a silly thing to include on a list of things to avoid while traveling but hear us out. Macau is home to some of the most incredible heritage sites in all of China. From ancient temples and ruins to colonial buildings and churches, There is so much history and culture to explore. 


However, we often find that visitors come to Macau and focus solely on the glitz and glamour of the casinos and hotels without taking time to appreciate these UNESCO World Heritage sites which are an integral part of what makes Macao so special. 


So our advice is, When you’re planning your trip, make sure to factor in time to explore some ( or all! ) of these amazing places which include: 


  • The Ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral 

  • A-Ma Temple 

  • Senado Square 

  • Fortaleza do Monte 


Not Trying Local Delicacies


Macanese food is a fusion of Portuguese and Chinese cuisine and is widely considered some of the best food in Asia. From mouthwatering Portuguese egg tarts to African Chicken Rice and everything in between, there are endless culinary delights to discover. Many visitors don’t realize that such a unique fusion cuisine exists and We can’t stress enough how important it is to try at least a few local dishes while you’re here! Some must-try items include: 


  • Portuguese egg tarts 

  • African chicken rice 

  • Curry fish balls 

  • Chiu chow dumplings  


Missing Out on Free Attractions


Yes, you read that correctly… There are plenty of free things to see and do in Macau! Just because Macau is known for being a luxurious destination doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank while you’re here. If you find yourself short on cash or just looking for some free entertainment, check out our list of free attractions below: 


  • View the Lotus Flower Roundabout Sculpture from across town  

  • Explore Taipa Houses Museum  

  • Stroll down Cotai Strip Promenade  

  • See the Water Show at Wynn Palace

    You did great! I don't think I could do it... but I'm sure you'll be having amazing experiences and that's more important than what you're going to wear. I'm such an over packer. I have to pack to fly to DC on Sunday and I haven't even started. I do know that I'll probably have way too much luggage.

  5. Hi Chick,
    I was just thinking about you this morning and wondering how your trip is going! I'm glad that you did a post on what to pack...last time I went back packing...packing was always the hardest part. I love your LBD post and now I'm going to checkout the battle of the mascaras...I faced a similar "dilemma" when Nordstom had their sale and wound up getting Lancome instead of Dior...let's go see if I made the right choice. :) Also, here's the island of flowers in panama http://www.taboga.panamanow.com...hope you haven't already left there.
