Emmys 2013 Best and Worst Dressed

Starting off with Allison Williams in a simple and rather boring Ralph Lauren dress.  Pretty, yes, but thumbs down for being too middle-of-the-road.

Carrie Underwood (why was she there?) in a purple Romona Keveza ball gown. I love the shape of this dress, in fact it's very similar to what I chose for my bridesmaids. But it's just that... bridal... therefore naturally more conservative and a bit more "poof" than it needed to be for the Emmys. I would have liked if Carrie had chosen something more streamlined and fashion-forward for once. And something not in taffeta. Never in taffeta.

Julie Bowen in pale pink Zac Posen and lots of ruffles. I like the detailing on the bodice but those little sleeves have got to go!

A unique choice by Connie Britton wearing a gold embroidered Naeem Khan blue strapless dress. I think this went very nicely with her complexion and showed off her long lines.

Elisabeth Moss wearing a pretty black and white embellished dress from Andrew Gn, but nothing that knocks it out of the ballpark.

Kate Mara wearing all white J. Mendel. I'm not sure about the dress or styling (think severe hair and makeup) and am even less inclined to like those net peep-toe platform shoes.

Mindy Kaling, I love your show, and I even love the silhouette of this Georges Chakra dress, but overall I don't think this is a great look. The fingerwave curls and tendrils clash with the neckline embellishment and we can see your belly button outline. This dress should have had a test run of sorts to see how well it would photograph.

Oh Lena Dunham, bless your heart, but this Prada frock is just too much.

Betsy Brandt, Aunt Marie for those of us who watch Breaking Bad, what were you thinking? From the insanely teased hair pouf to the nipple darts to the wrinkly dress, this look is a thumbs down!

Well, if you're going to wear a see-through black lace gown with a slit up to your hip and an exposed crotch, I suppose Lena Headey shows us the way to do it. The long sleeves and thicker fabric of the skirt help to balance out this Alessandra Rich dress. The best of the worst, perhaps.

But the award for worst of the worst goes to Julianne Hough. She is such a gorgeous girl but this sheer Jenny Packham dress does absolutely nothing for her. So revealing and unflattering! If you're looking for a new stylist Julianne I would be happy to help ;)

Okay let's clear our palette and take a peek at some of the best dressed ladies on the red carpet. Here's Zooey Deschanel wearing ice blue J. Mendel. What a beautifully tailored waistline and I love the neckline cutout.

Claire Danes, I'm on the fence about you. I think the faux blonde bob is lopsided and too severe. I'm also not a huge fan of this neckline with its mesh bust. That being said, the detailing of this gorgeous Armani Prive gown is absolutely stunning and complemented so nicely with the minimal accessories.

Kerry Washington in a flowy and romantic gown by Marchesa. A little too whimsical for my liking, but the white banding across the bodice is lovely and no one can deny she looks beautiful.

Curvy bombshell, this time in Vera Wang. We get it Sophia Vergara. But if it ain't broke don't fix it, right?

Anna Gunn rocking this white satin and black lace dress by Romona Keveza. Same designer as Carrie Underwood (with a hint of bridal too) but this gown and soft updo are right on point. What an outfit to win an Emmy in!

Christina Hendricks looking svelte and beautiful as always in this black lace Christian Siriano frock. Love those lace cap sleeves and banding under the bust.

Another LBD, another knockout. Robin Wright is stunning in this structured and geometric black dress from Ralph Lauren. My runner up for best dressed!

But my choice for best dressed at the Emmys goes to Kaley Cuoco in this beautiful aubergine Vera Wang gown. A little sheer (in the right place), a little structured in the bodice, and perfectly flowy in the skirt. Kaley's soft waves and simple jewellery completed the look. This colour is my favourite of the season!

What did you think of the red carpet? I'd love to hear your thoughts about best and worst dressed.

Well...now that I have a had a chance to take a good look at everyone. Here are my picks:

    Best Dressed, top 3:
    1) Linda Cardelini, such a unique are artistic design, love it
    2) Padma Lakshmi, so sleek and simple, stunning
    3) Shaun Robinson, sleek black, super sexy

    No go:
    1) Lena Dunham - I get that she has a unique style and all, but this is not the right choice by any means
    2) Lena Heady - this dress is all over the place, too much going on, and the white shoes just made it worse
    3) Julianne Hough - Agree with you D, she is stunning, and this dress does nothing for her. Too sloppy

      1) Linda... hmm not sure who that is... was she wearing that pretty purple ruffled dress?
      2) Padma - loved the jewellery, hated the mesh cutouts. They looked so messy and like she had the oddest wrinkles on her back when she moved!
      3) Shaun - had to look this one up - yes definitely a pretty dress, very flattering. What did you think of her hair though? :S

As for the no's... yup same page! Why is this sheer skirt thing becoming a trend? Hate it!

I'm a fan of Allison Williams too, I just wish she would have chosen something more fun and risky! She is such a gorgeous girl with an awesome figure and the blue dressed seemed so conservative. Ah well, I guess this is only the beginning of award season now! Who was your fave of the night?

I didn't watch the Emmy's but I did enjoy reading your take on the fashion! I agree with a lot of what you said, though there seemed to be a lack of color and when there was color, it was not done very well!

Confession: I didn't watch the Emmys either, just looked up the Red Carpet as fashion is my favourite part of the show anyway! hehe. As for colour, I'm also a huge fan and would have loved to see some bolder choices!

Danielle, I do agree with many of your choices and comments, but have to disagree with some! I am obsessed with Kerry Washington's dress and she is my best dressed! I love the romantic flow of the dressed juxtaposed with the straps on the bodice (She is the best dressed woman now btw.. according to People anyways). Claire Dane's dress would have been magic if she had pulled the waistline or if she had more cleavage coverage. Julianne Hough... I actually don't mind the bikini line, what bothers me is the off the shoulder. The dress on the runway works, but with Julianne, the straps need to sit much higher off the shoulder and I think it would be gorgeous. I love Julie Bowen, but this dress is too much for her petite body type, if it were on Sofia, I think it would have been a knockout. As for Lena.. love her, but totally agree, she is my worst dressed, the big print is just too much for her. And that's my two cents.

I love your two cents. And I love Kerry Washington (btw are you watching Scandal yet?). The bodice is beautiful but it looks like she has toilet paper pom pom poufs on her lower half. I wish she would have made a bolder choice. Claire Danes - yup she needed to pull up her dress a couple inches coz it just looks so awkward across her chest! And new hair do for sure. I would have liked to see Julie's dress on Sofia as it would have been a nice change from the usual. But Sofia never seems to go for soft or muted colours. And Lena... it would be great to see her in something more structured and fashion forward on the next red carpet. She was swallowed up by those red flowers!

I really don't like the dress on Claire Danes, the neckline is completely wrong for her, her bob looks like it was cut by a blind man and she should have worn a necklace with such a severe neckline. The dress is beautiful none-the-less just on the wrong person.

lol it would be too easy if I said I liked everybody right? As for Kate Mara, I appreciate that she went with a bold look as there were few fashion risks on the red carpet. But yes she needed different styling, a bit softer with the hair perhaps? And sleeker with the shoes. White pointy-toe pumps (similar to what Lena Heady was wearing) would've been a better choice in my humble opinion :)
