Tutorial: 6 Easy Steps for Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

Ok, I’ll admit it, I used to be really bad about cleaning my makeup brushes. I used to go months and months (and months... alright, you get the picture) without cleaning them. It was just one of those things that always got pushed to the bottom of my to-do list. In the past few years though I have been much better about cleaning my makeup brushes, especially when I realized how easy it was! And bonus - I’ve definitely noticed a reduction in my skin breaking out.

Think about how often you use your brushes, where you store them, and all the gunk that eventually piles up on them. Considering how expensive brushes can be (I pay between $12 – 40 for mine), maximizing the length of the brush life is important.

Today I’m sharing a quick and easy tutorial for cleaning your makeup brushes. I follow should follow this every week but let’s be honest #aintnobodygottimeforthat. Every other week is more like it :P

Step 1: Gather your dirty brushes (duh).

Step 2: Gather your tools – 1 or 2 hand towels, a small bowl, and makeup shampoo. I use Sephora and I’m happy with it, but you could also use water and baby shampoo or water and unscented soap too.

Step 3: Fill bowl with warm water and shampoo. I find with this brand of shampoo I have to fill the water ¼ way, then add shampoo so it gets all sudsy while filling up to the top.

Step 4: Dunk brush in bowl, swirl around as necessary. I used to be very cautious about not getting the base of the bristles wet (where they connect with the handle). I remember as a child when my art teachers would tell me when cleaning paint brushes to always be careful or else we'd ruin the brushes, but it doesn't apply here. Once I accidentally soaked my favourite blush brush and nothing became of it, I tried it with the others as well and everything's fine. I get a much better clean when I can soak the brushes completely.

Step 5: Rinse in warm water, gently rubbing the bristles with your fingers.

Step 6: Place on towel and pat dry. Reshape brush into desired shape then lay flat (do not fan out! I learned the hard way this doesn’t help to air dry, it just misshapes the brush).

Depending on how many brushes I have, I place them on a separate hand towel to air dry overnight. I try to wash them on a Sunday evening around 7 or 8 pm, which gives them enough time to dry for a couple hours, then I rotate them before I go to bed. By the time I wake up in the morning the brushes are perfectly dry. See that last picture of dirty water? That's from only two brushes and is exactly why you should clean your brushes regularly!
