Met Gala 2013: Best and Worst Dressed

Every year Vogue hosts the Costume Institute Gala, aka the Met Gala, to celebrate the opening of the Costume Exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. This red carpet is considered the best of the best in the fashion world precisely because it caters specifically to the fashion industry. Edgy, contemporary, fashion-forward pieces dominate the red carpet and safe wholesome dresses are (supposed to be) left at home.

This year’s theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture. The priority is supposed to be theme first and pretty second. I’ve gathered the highlights of which fashionistas rocked punk glam and my top 3 picks for best dressed. Of course, what is a red carpet without a worst dressed list so keep on scrolling to see my choices for the top 3 offenders as well.

Pleasantly surprised by Taylor Swift! Looking great with that dark makeup, sexy cut-out dress, and hair pulled off her face.

Dakota Fanning all grown up.

Kristen Stewart looking thrilled as usual. One of the few to wear pants, she's rocking some seriously androgynous makeup as well.

Jessica Alba looking lovely but missing the punk memo. Great dress but wrong gala.

Werk it Beyonce! (Also missing the punk memo)

J. Lo looking fierce in Michael Kors.

The ladies of Dior, Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard, not looking fierce at all, but yes very pretty.

Minka Kelly and her crazy sick body. Love her vampy red lips! (I think I have a special place in my heart for her because of my love for Friday Night Lights. Anyone else used to watch that show?)

MET Most Ridiculous: Sarah Jessica Parker. That being said, she knows she's being ridiculous and over-the-top and while this is not wearable in the least for a normal person, I kind of love it! It's perfect for a gala celebrating the Costume Institute. Now what about that headdress - all in the spirit of punk, right?

Speaking of ridiculous (in a good way) here's Nicole Ritchie in all white, literally. She definitely gets points for sticking to the theme.

A close contender for best dressed, Nina Dobrev has some serious attitude. This is how you do punk chic!

Loving this black studded dress worn by Cara Delevigne. But somebody else wore studs better... (hint: Cara ended up smooching her with a big fat wet one on the lips inside the party)

Drum roll please - here are my top three picks for best dressed at the 2013 Met Gala!

Number three... Rooney Mara is kinda predictable with her black or white outfits (seriously, that's all she ever wears on a red carpet!) but who cares when she wears it this well. This white lace Givenchy dress is lovely on her! Dark slicked back hair and brows with deep plum lips and a pale face complete her look.

Second best dressed of the night - Anne Hathaway picks up her style game after that awful nipple-dart dress at the Oscars. Wearing this wicked sheer and cut-out black Valentino gown, Anne surprised everyone by showing up with platinum locks too. Smoky eyes finish off her sexy look. This is goth glam done right.

My choice for number one...

Best dressed at the 2013 Met Gala goes to Sienna Miller in Burberry. Sienna accessorized her white floor length gown with an absolutely perfect gold studded black leather jacket, gold studded headbank, and smoky black makeup. Punk perfection!

Now on to the not so good...

Considering this is the host of the event herself, what were you thinking Anna Wintour? Yes okay she's in her 60s and this floral dress is flattering enough, but couldn't her daughter Bee have at least channelled the punk look on behalf of her mother? Disappointing.

Not feeling the wet faux-hawk but good try on the faux nose ring. Word on the street is Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake was supposed to attend together wearing Tom Ford. When Justin bailed due to concert rehearsals Ms. Devil Wears Prada (who personally approves each person on the guest list) refused to allow Jessica to come alone so she had to hook up with Giambattista Valli and attend as his date instead. Guess the perks of being Mrs. Timberlake only carry you so far!

Now I love me some good Scandal but what’s up with this dress Kerry Washington? Is that taffeta?? The best thing about this outfit is Kerry’s over-the-elbow leather gloves.

MET Most Underwhelming Part 1: Blake Lively. Usually Blake has some serious style game which is why I expect more from her, but this grey and black frock isn't doing it for me. Also, a four part puffy ponytail? Really? I haven't seen this hairstyle since my grade two days!

MET Most Underwhelming Part 2: Cameron Diaz in cobalt blue. Love the colour. Dress = meh. The cape comes down way too low in front and even that spiked contraption around her waist couldn't help it.

She's just being Miley, right? :S Yes I'll give it to her, Miley Cyrus certainly encapsulated punk/goth... but I just can't get on board with this.

Madonna, you crazy b*tch! At least she looks like she's having a blast.

I usually don't expect much from Katie Holmes anyway, but what is this white flowy mess? And why is her hair in a French roll when the Met Gala theme is supposed to be all about punk??

Last year Kate Upton made headlines about how she had to beg and buy her way in to this event. This year, no such drama, and what does she wear? I swear I have maxi dresses fancier than this.

Here's Ashley Olsen, my number three pick for worst dressed. First of all, how is this in the spirit of punk whatsoever? Secondly, how is this flattering? Isn't she supposed to be a bona-fide couture fashion designer? I'm never a fan of her outfits.

Here's my number two worst dressed - Gwyneth Paltrow going completely against the grain in this pink creasy ball gown. Have you guys heard about how she was recently named Most Hated Celebrity then a week later Most Beautiful Woman? Not that those titles really carry much weight, especially when crowned by tabloid magazines, but I read a funny quote from USA Today that certainly doesn't help with her public disdain. After the MET Gala, Gwyneth told reporters, "I'm never going again. It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all." Oh Gwynnie, I don't think you'd be invited back anyway. I hear that Anna Wintour knows a thing or two about how to hold a grudge...

My choice for worst dressed at the 2013 Met Gala is Linda Evangelista. What event did Linda think she was attending? She used to be super model royalty but this has Medieval Times written all over it. This looks like a tulle explosion.

*Honourable mention for worst dressed goes to Kim Kardashian for wearing her grandmother's drapes, but since she's pregnant and already has so much mean press written about her I'm going to give the poor girl a break.

Your comments are hilarious! Especially the side note, and yeah Kim has been a target lately and I couldn't stop myself from writing about her lol. Sienna looked amazing and actually listened to the memo about the theme being 'punk.' And for Linda, I have no comment, she's one of my favorite supermodels of all time and she disappointed me when she came out looking like an old hag in that medieval gown. No bueno. Great post Danielle!
